VA Deputy Secretary Holds Roundtable with UNLV Student Veterans

 

UNLV’s Military and Veteran Services Center (MVSC) reached its latest milestone with the arrival of The Honorable Tanya Bradsher. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Deputy Secretary’s visit on March 8th was the first of its kind for the campus – allowing student veterans to voice their thoughts directly to Washington, D.C. UNLV Hosts Travel & Tourism Roundtable with Under Secretary of Commerce

 

Key stakeholders gathered at UNLV on March 13th for a roundtable discussion with The Honorable Marisa Lago, U.S. Department of Commerce Under Secretary, to discuss Las Vegas’ travel, tourism, hospitality, and gaming sectors. Associate Vice President, Zach Miles represented UNLV. The discussion provided an opportunity to explore current opportunities and challenges facing the industry, and how the government and private sector can continue to work together to implement the National Travel and Tourism Strategy, which has the goal of welcoming 90 million international visitors to the United States, who are estimated to spend $279 billion annually by 2027.

UNLV welcomed the U.S. Air Force Band of the Golden West on February 23rd. The only active-duty Air Force band west of the Rockies, the Band of the Golden West is comprised of 60 talented and versatile Airmen-musicians under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Cristina Moore Urrutia. The concert was free and open to the public.

Professor Ross P. Berkeley, MD, (Emergency Medicine) was recently appointed by Governor Lombardo to the Advisory Council on Graduate Medical Education for the State of Nevada. Berkeley is chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine and serves as program director of the emergency medicine residency.

The week of March 18th, UNLV’s Criminal Justice Club hosted a career panel in conjunction with Women’s History Month. Participants included representatives from the FBI, the U.S. Attorney's Office, the DEA, the ATF, and others. 

The Honorable Jacky Rosen, U.S. Senator, visited the UNLV School of Nursing Clinical Simulation Center on March 28th, to promote the recently passed Train More Nurses Act which promotes quality health care and helps address our state’s nursing shortage.

The 20-month period between the Nevada Legislature’s biennially sessions is referred to as the "interim." During this time, interim committees created by the Legislature work on issues that arise between sessions. Learn more on the Interim Committees website. 3/11/24 Joint Interim Standing Committee on Health and Human Services – Marc Kahn, Dean of the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine, joined his counterpart from UNR, Dean Paul J. Hauptman, to present information about Nevada’s Schools of Medicine, and advocate for Graduate Medical Education funding and support.

3/11/24 Joint Interim Standing Committee on Health and Human Services - Imelda Reyes, Interim Dean of the UNLV School of Nursing presented information about Nevada Nursing Programs and the impact of SB 375 (2023).

3/13/24 Interim Finance Committee – NSHE Chancellor Patty Charlton, UNLV CFO Chris Vitton, and UNLV Vice President of Public Safety Adam Garcia appeared before the Committee regarding an appropriations request to support more security staffing on NSHE campuses which was approved with $2.6M being allocated.  

3/20/24 Joint Interim Standing Committee on Education – Bradley Marianno, UNLV Associate Professor of Educational Policy and Leadership, lent his expertise about proficiency rates by demographics across Nevada and limitations related to reliance on this data to the Committee.


3/20/24 Joint Interim Standing Committee on Education - Christopher A. Kearney, UNLV Distinguished Professor and Chair from the Department of Psychology, lent his expertise about chronic absenteeism, associated risk factors, and promising interventions being piloted right now to the Committee.

The collaborative event focuses on a specific tribal sacred place in Nevada every year, promoting environmental stewardship and raising awareness for the protection of public lands. 2/24 – UNLV participated in the CCSD Family Academy event to share resource information with more than 80 families in attendance. 

2/24 – The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at UNLV hosted a table at the Cambridge Recreational Center to share information about campus resources and the OLLI program.

2/27 - UNLV President, Keith E. Whitfield and Director of UNLV’s Oral History Research Center, Claytee D. White joined community leaders and members at the groundbreaking ceremony for the new West Las Vegas Library.

3/1 – Danelis Acosta, Events Coordinator for Government & Community Engagement, participated in Arturo Cambeiro’s Career Day to share details about her job with students, including her career journey and tips for working in the event industry.

3/2 - The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at UNLV hosted a table at the Aging Wellness Expo and showcased how they stay active and engaged after 50.

3/6 – UNLV participated in the Health Fair at the West Flamingo Senior Center to share medical, dental, mental health and legal resources, as well as information about UNLV’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute.

3/19 – UNLV attended the first Latino Network Meeting of 2024 which was held at Fire Station 1 in the heart of the City of Las Vegas. The meeting provided an opportunity to connect with the Las Vegas Fire and Rescue team to learn more about the resources they offer to our community.
